Title Your Photo

Be Clear and Specific
Include recognizable people,
places, or events in the title to
make it searchable. Example:
Hastings-on-Hudson, 4th of July
Parade

Use Descriptive Keywords
Include significant details, like
the year (approximate if you’re
unsure) or key events. Example:
Class of ’76 Graduation, Hastings
High School

Mention Notable People
If there are recognizable people
in the photo, name them in the
title. Example: Joe’s Corner Store,
Main Street, Circa 1970 –
Featuring Bob and Mary

Include Approximate Years
If you’re unsure about the exact
year, it’s helpful to include an
approximate range or “circa”
followed by the decade. Example:
Hastings High Football Game,
Circa 1982

Describe Your Photos

Provide Context and Highlight
Special Moments
Add any background information
you know about the photo, such as
the event, location, or people
involved.
Example: This photo was taken
during the Hastings annual
Memorial Day parade, families
marching down Main Street.

Identify People and Places
Name anyone who can be
recognized, and mention the
location. If unsure about the
names, you can ask others for help.
Example: This is a group photo
taken in front of the Hastings Train
Station—do you recognize anyone?

Keep It Simple
You don’t need to write a novel. A
brief, informative description
works best!

Scanning

Scan at 300 dpi or higher to ensure
good image quality. This helps
preserve details and makes the
photo easier to view online.

  • Save as JPEG or PNG for uploading
  • Use color scanning even for B&W
    photos
  • Gently wipe off dust or smudges
    from photos before scanning to get a
    cleaner image.
  • Crop and straighten your scan if
    needed, but don’t worry about
    making it perfect—we’re just glad
    you’re sharing!
